Define the training you seek
Decide whether you want systematic disciplinary knowledge, research capability or professional development. Turn the goal into questions about methods to learn, work to produce and time available.
Read the programme structure
Compare modules, dissertations or final projects, supervision and assessment. The taught–research distinction is useful, but the curriculum and graduation rules of each programme still need individual attention.
A doctorate begins with a research question
Doctoral planning turns an interest into a question that can be discussed. Review methodological foundations, literature and prior research experience. A supervisor’s published interests may help assess fit; confirm actual supervision and recruitment with the department.
Record trade-offs as well as benefits
List the training offered, resources still to be confirmed and opportunity costs. Explain choices with evidence rather than replacing personal judgement with a single ranking or an abstract degree label.
