Express goals as capabilities
Specify the analytical methods, subject knowledge or research skills behind the phrase “improve my qualifications”. Distinguish gaining knowledge, changing fields and building research foundations.
Look for observable outcomes
Assignments, research projects, dissertations and practical work help reveal the training involved. Consider independent responsibilities, access to feedback and how a learner can explain their own contribution.
Account for commitments and constraints
Time, work, finances and family responsibilities belong in the same decision framework. Part-time, distance or block teaching arrangements must be checked against institutional rules rather than inferred from promotion.
Avoid turning educational value into a promise
A programme can provide training without guaranteeing a particular job, salary or immigration outcome. Assess education and subsequent development separately, leaving room for uncertainty.
